A Systematic Approach To Control Ants

As Dixie Exterminators, we manage ant pests with a systematic and thoughtful approach, using our extensive knowledge about different species' biology and habits to determine the most effective strategy.

Once we've identified the ant species, we can more effectively find nests, entry points, and signs of infestation. Depending on the species, nests can be in soil, trees, stumps or buildings. We also identify the conditions contributing to the infestation, often with insights from our clients, who can provide valuable information about the problem.

Pest Management: Factors That Cause Ants

Long-term success in ant pest management requires client education on pest biology, detection, and contributing factors like poor sanitation, moisture damage, cracks in a foundation, landscape mulch, piled materials surrounding a structure, or infested plants. We focus on working with homeowners to correct these factors to achieve long-term control and prevent reinfestation.

Once we've determined the extent of the infestation and the locations of the colonies, we recommend a three-fold strategy: habitat modification (like repairing leaky pipes), mechanical methods (such as caulking potential entryways), and chemical treatments (using residual insecticides and baits).

Residual Insecticides

Ant control often includes a broad-based treatment strategy that includes residual insecticides. These are most effective when applied directly to the nest, with the choice of formulation depending on the treatment site. Ants nesting within structural voids can be treated with dust, aerosol, or foam. We can treat insulated voids with a residual aerosol product or an insecticide applied within cellulose.

How We Treat a Slab Foundation for Ants

If ants are nesting under a slab foundation, we typically use baits for treatment. If the ants aren't attracted to the bait, we can treat the soil. Ants nesting within the spaces formed by stacks of materials generally require that the items be unstacked to expose colonies for treatment.

Our Treatment Applications for Ants

Ants nesting inside structural timbers, landscape loggings, and fence posts can be treated by injecting a dust, aerosol, or a water-based product. Ant colonies nesting in lawns, landscape beds, or under objects such as stones and landscape loggings, can be drenched with a water-based insecticide.

Lastly, we may employ general application around the perimeter of a building using a residual water-based or granular formulation as an effective treatment for ants.
